The FDA has issued new guidance that revised its list of tree nuts that are considered major food allergens. The major change is that coconut and other nuts (beech, butternut, chestnut, chinquapin, cola/kola, ginkgo, hickory, palm, pili, and shea) were removed from the list. Please be advised that BASC is working to update its labeling to reflect this change. If you have a coconut or other nut allergy that’s been removed from the list you should no longer rely on the tree nut (TN) label to signify its inclusion in a food item.
Per the FDA guidelines, BASC’s tree nut (TN) label will signify the inclusion of the following nuts:
- Almonds
- Brazil Nuts
- Cashews
- Filberts/Hazelnuts
- Macadamia Nut/Bush Nuts
- Pecans
- Pine Nuts/Pinon Nuts
- Pistachios
- Walnuts (black, California, English, Japanese/heartnut, and Persian)
As always, please ask a manager (or a team member who can get a manager) if you have any questions related to food allergens and ingredients.
